U.S. President Joe Biden may speak by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today, Wednesday.
Biden may ask Netanyahu if Israel has any plans to attack Iran. The two leaders could discuss this issue over the phone.
This information was reported by the American media outlet Axios, citing three U.S. officials.
One U.S. official said they want to use this phone call to highlight the limitations of potential Israeli retaliation.
Citing the U.S. official, the Axios report states that Washington wants to ensure that any Israeli strike on Iranian targets is not disproportionate.
The White House did not immediately respond to Axios’ request for comment.
On September 27, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan were killed in an Israeli attack in Lebanon. In retaliation, Iran launched missile attacks on Israel last week. No one was killed in this attack. Washington described Iran’s attack as ineffective. Since then, there have been concerns about Israeli retaliation.
Netanyahu has already vowed that Iran will pay a heavy price for the missile attack.
On the other hand, Tehran has said that any retaliation will be met with a massively destructive response.
Amid these mutual threats, there are concerns that war could spread further in the Middle East. And this could involve the United States.
Biden said last week that if he were in Israel’s position, he would consider alternatives to attacking Iran’s oil fields. He believes Israel has not yet reached a definitive decision on how to respond to Iran’s attack.
