Iran has launched a missile attack targeting Israel. The Israeli military announced this in a statement on Tuesday.
Following the attack, sirens blared across Israel, and citizens rushed to seek safe shelter. During a live broadcast on Israeli state television, reporters were seen lying on the ground.
Reuters journalists observed missiles being intercepted in the airspace of Jordan, a neighboring country to both Iran and Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a message urging citizens to remain vigilant. They were also instructed to follow the directions of local military commands.
“If you hear sirens, you must go to a protected area and stay there until further notice,” the message stated.
Earlier, the Israeli military had warned that Iran might launch a large-scale ballistic missile attack. Citizens were advised to stay in safe rooms during the attack.
Later, the Israeli military reported that Iran had fired 180 missiles. Most of these were intercepted in collaboration with the United States Central Command. A few missiles did strike Israeli territory, though the extent of damage was not immediately clear.
Tehran had vowed retaliation following the reported death of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, in an Israeli bombing in Lebanon.
Iran launched missiles targeting Tel Aviv after Israeli forces began a limited ground operation in Lebanon on Tuesday. About a year ago, Israel launched an attack on Gaza in Palestine. Their indiscriminate bombing in Gaza has resulted in over 40,000 deaths. With Israel’s ground operation in Lebanon beginning today, the conflict in the Middle East has taken on a new dimension since the start of that war.
