Amid escalating tensions with Israel, the Iranian government has proposed tripling their military budget. During a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani disclosed this crucial information. She articulated that there would be a substantial enhancement in the country’s military expenditure, potentially surpassing 200 percent. However, the government has maintained reticence regarding the specific quantum of the proposed budget allocation.
According to the Stockholm International Peace and Research Institute, Iran’s military sector expenditure amounted to $10.3 billion in 2023. The country’s legislators are scheduled to finalize the new military budget in March following comprehensive deliberations.
Mohajerani emphasized that multifaceted initiatives are being implemented to address the nation’s defense prerequisites, highlighting that this matter has been accorded paramount importance.
The proclamation regarding the defense budget increment comes in the wake of Israel’s attack on Iran. Prior to this, on October 1, Iran had executed missile strikes on Israel. The Israeli offensive resulted in the casualties of four Iranian military personnel. Local media outlets have also reported the demise of one civilian in this incident.
In the aftermath of the attack on Iran, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant asserted that they have established strategic equilibrium through precise strikes against their adversaries. He claimed they have significantly diminished their enemy’s capabilities and demolished their missile manufacturing infrastructure and defense systems. However, Iranian authorities have maintained that the damage inflicted was minimal and issued cautionary statements regarding potential retaliatory measures.
