In the first face-to-face television debate with Republican candidate Donald Trump for the US presidential election, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris spoke in favor of Israel’s right to ‘self-defense’. At the same time, she called for an end to the Gaza war. The debate, organized by US broadcaster ABC News, began yesterday, Tuesday at 9 PM local time (7 AM Wednesday Bangladesh time) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition to various issues including the Russia-Ukraine war and women’s abortion rights in the United States, the Israel-Hamas war was also discussed.
The Democratic Party candidate Kamala also called for establishing a ceasefire in Gaza. In addition, she expressed support for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine in rebuilding Gaza.
During the debate, Kamala was asked how she would handle the ongoing Israeli war in Gaza and the related stalemate (efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza) if she wins the election.
In response, the Vice President reiterated some of her past comments on this issue. She said that Israel has the right to self-defense. However, how they do it is a matter of concern.
