Russia has executed its most extensive assault on Ukraine in recent months. On Sunday, Moscow launched waves of missiles and drones across the country, resulting in at least 9 casualties nationwide. Kyiv has characterized this assault as “horrific.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia fired 120 missiles and approximately 100 drones targeting the capital Kyiv and the country’s southern, central, and western regions. Casualties were reported in Mykolaiv, Lviv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa regions.
Following today’s attack, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat stated, “It was a horrific night.” He further reported that 144 Russian missiles and drones were intercepted.
This massive assault comes at a critical juncture when Russia is making steady advances in eastern Ukraine. Simultaneously, Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election has raised concerns about the continuity of US support that Kyiv has been receiving to sustain its war effort.
The attack occurred just two days after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging an end to the Ukraine war. Kyiv had strongly criticized Scholz’s call, and today they suggested that this assault was the Kremlin’s real response to the Chancellor’s appeal.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated, “This is Putin’s true response to those who recently called and met with him. Ukraine seeks to restore peace through strength, not through appeasement.”
