A man from Illinois has been sentenced to 53 years in prison by a United States court for murdering a 6-year-old American child of Palestinian descent.
The convicted man, Joseph Czuba, 73, was found guilty in February this year of stabbing to death the young child Wadea Al-Fayoumi and attacking his mother Hanaan Shahin with a knife.
Hanaan Shahin and her son Wadea were tenants in Joseph’s house. One week after the war between Gaza’s Palestinian independence-seeking armed organization Hamas and Israel began on October 7, 2023, Joseph brutally attacked Shahin and her son. The court considered this incident a hate crime stemming from Islamophobia.
“Hanaan Shahin and her son Wadea were tenants in Joseph’s house. One week after the war between Gaza’s Palestinian independence-seeking armed organization Hamas and Israel began on October 7, 2023, Joseph brutally attacked Hanaan and her son.”
Joseph stabbed Wadea 26 times with a military knife that had a serrated edge. During the autopsy, a 6-inch blade was removed from Wadea’s abdomen.
According to media reports, Hanaan Shahin and Joseph’s wife (now ex-wife) Mary told the court that Joseph targeted the Muslim family after becoming agitated about the Gaza conflict.
Prosecutors said that in 2023, Joseph forcibly entered Shahin’s bedroom and began stabbing her. The woman somehow managed to run to the bathroom, lock the door, and call the police. At that time, Joseph attacked 6-year-old Wadea.

Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak sentenced Joseph to 30 years in prison for the murder of Wadea. Additionally, he received 20 years for the attack on Shahin and another 3 years for the hate crime. Joseph will have to serve these prison sentences consecutively.
After this incident in 2023, then-US President Joe Biden described the attack as a “horrific act of hate” and said, “There is no place for such activities on American soil.”
