Former Russian President sharply criticizes U.S. leader's statements about America's role in defeating Nazi Germany, reaffirming Russia's sacrifices of 27 million lives

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has issued a scathing rebuke of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertions regarding America’s contribution to victory in World War Two, characterizing them as “pretentious nonsense.” The sharp criticism comes at a particularly sensitive moment in U.S.-Russian relations, as both nations cautiously explore potential pathways toward resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The controversy began when Trump posted on his Truth Social platform late Thursday, claiming that “nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance” in both world wars, and asserting that the United States “did more than any other country, by far, in producing a victorious result in World War II.” These statements, which minimize the enormous sacrifices and contributions of other Allied nations, particularly the Soviet Union, have touched a profound nerve in Russia, where the war continues to hold immense historical and cultural significance.

Medvedev, who served as Russian president from 2008 to 2012 and has emerged as one of Moscow’s most vocal anti-Western voices since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, responded forcefully through a post on the Russian social network VK. While acknowledging that Trump’s proposal to introduce a special holiday on May 8 (when Western nations celebrate Victory in Europe Day) was “not a bad thing,” Medvedev firmly rejected the American president’s characterization of the United States’ role in the conflict.

“Our people sacrificed 27 million lives of their sons and daughters in the name of destroying accursed fascism,” Medvedev wrote, referencing the staggering Soviet death toll that far exceeded casualties suffered by any other nation during the conflict. “Therefore, Victory Day is ours and it is May 9! So it was, so it is, so it will always be!”

The exchange highlights the profound differences in how World War Two is remembered and commemorated in Russia compared to Western nations. For Russians, the conflict – known as the Great Patriotic War – represents an unparalleled national trauma and sacrifice that ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany. The Soviet Union bore the brunt of fighting against Hitler’s forces on the Eastern Front, with battles of unprecedented scale and ferocity that ultimately broke the back of the Wehrmacht, long before the Western Allies established a significant ground presence in Europe.

Historians widely acknowledge that while American industrial might, logistics support, and eventual military engagement were crucial to Allied victory, the Soviet Union’s massive land campaign against approximately 75% of Germany’s military forces was the decisive factor in defeating Nazi Germany. Between 1941 and 1945, the Eastern Front witnessed the largest military confrontation in history, with over 200 divisions of the Wehrmacht engaged against Soviet forces at the conflict’s peak.

Medvedev’s pointed response comes at a particularly delicate moment in U.S.-Russian relations. Both Washington and Moscow have recently signaled interest in exploring potential diplomatic pathways toward resolving the Ukraine conflict, with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reportedly finding common ground on a proposed 30-day ceasefire during their meeting at Pope Francis’ funeral last week. Simultaneously, Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated general agreement with ceasefire discussions while insisting that numerous issues require clarification.

This public disagreement over historical narratives underscores the complex backdrop against which any potential peace negotiations must occur. Russia’s collective memory of World War Two – including the enormous sacrifice and ultimate triumph – remains a cornerstone of national identity and a source of legitimacy for the current government. Any perceived attempt to diminish or rewrite this history is likely to provoke strong reactions, as Medvedev’s response demonstrates.

The differing commemorative dates themselves – May 8 in Western nations versus May 9 in Russia and several former Soviet republics – reflect not just a time zone difference but fundamentally different historical experiences and commemorative traditions. While Western celebrations often focus on liberation and the restoration of democracy, Russian Victory Day commemorations emphasize national sacrifice, resilience, and the ultimately decisive role played by the Soviet Union in defeating Nazi Germany.

As Washington and Moscow navigate the complex diplomatic terrain surrounding the Ukraine conflict, this exchange serves as a reminder of how historical narratives and national memory can complicate contemporary geopolitical discussions, particularly at moments when precise diplomatic language and mutual understanding are most needed.
