“The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the messaging platform Telegram, Pavel Durov, has been arrested by French police. He was reportedly arrested at a French airport on Saturday evening.
French media TF1 reports:
“On Saturday evening, Durov landed at the country’s Le Bourget airport in his private jet. Soon after, he was arrested by French police!”
Durov, of Russian descent, was the founder and CEO of Telegram, a popular messaging app.
He was arrested based on a criminal warrant through Telegram.
This app is highly popular in various countries. It was banned in Russia in 2018 for maintaining its independence. However, the ban was lifted later in 2021.
Russia is closely monitoring the arrest. Russian media TASS reports:
“The Russian embassy in France is taking ‘immediate action’ regarding Durov’s arrest. They are trying to understand the situation.”
It’s reported that soon after Durov’s arrest, ordinary Russian citizens are holding protest rallies in front of the French embassy in Russia!
When the Russian government asked the app to hand over its data repository to the government, the app went against the government. As a result, it was banned in Russia in 2018. Later, it was operated from Dubai. Durov left Russia in 2014!
Telegram is the most popular communication medium in the world after Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat. Telegram was founded in 2013. It’s expected to have 1 billion users by 2025!”
