With only 57 days left until the US presidential election, the race between the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and the Republican candidate Donald Trump is heating up. The two candidates are busy campaigning, and their first televised debate is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, organized by ABC News.
This debate will be the first time that former President Trump and current Vice President Kamala are facing off.
Before the debate, on Saturday, Trump held a campaign rally in the swing state of Wisconsin. There, he attacked current President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a speech filled with his characteristic aggression, exaggeration, and falsehoods.
Addressing the white conservative supporters present, Trump said,
“The government of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris has imported killers, child abusers, and serial rapists from all over the world. They have also given weapons to law enforcement agencies to imprison political opponents.”
Trump also accused the government of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and facing multiple lawsuits in New York. He rejected the government’s claims of widespread Russian influence campaigns to impact this year’s election. Later, on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote,
“The Democrats cheated and won the 2020 presidential election.”
He said,
“When I win this time, there will be long-term imprisonment, so that such injustice in the courts never happens again.”
Meanwhile, Kamala has started preparing for Tuesday’s debate in Pennsylvania. On Saturday, she spent the day in a lighthearted mood. When asked what message she will give in the debate, Kamala said,
“It’s time to turn the page on division. It’s time to come together as a country. We need to walk the path of a new way forward.”
Kamala is elated to have the support of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz Cheney. Regarding this, she said,
“This support is courageous. It’s courageous because they have prioritized the country over their party.”
In the upcoming US presidential election, former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz Cheney have announced they will not vote for the Republican Party’s candidate Donald Trump; instead, they have declared their support for Kamala. Dick Cheney has described Trump as a ‘threat’, while his daughter Liz Cheney has labeled the Republican presidential candidate as a ‘dangerous’ person. On Saturday, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kamala said,
‘I feel very honored to have their (Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney) support.’
She further added,
‘The father-daughter duo has made a courageous statement.’
In contrast, there is a different picture in the Trump camp. There are doubts whether Trump will get the votes of his own party’s former leaders. Former US President George W. Bush and his wife Laura are yet to decide whether they will vote for the Republican Party’s candidate Donald Trump or the Democratic challenger Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election.
However, there is some good news for Trump as well. On last Friday, the country’s largest police union, the Fraternal Order of Police, announced their support for him. Earlier, he had also won a legal victory in a New York court. The court said the verdict in a business fraud case would be announced after the November 5th election. This is seen as a major opportunity for Kamala to clearly articulate her policy proposals, as the upcoming debate is expected to focus on Trump. Though Kamala has been attacking Trump, she is being criticized for not providing detailed information about her policies. Trump, on the other hand, has already expressed his expectations regarding the debate, saying,
“The debate format on Tuesday is treacherous. Even if he wins, they won’t admit it. They will say, ‘Trump suffered a humiliating defeat.'”
Where the debate is scheduled to take place, in the state of Pennsylvania, an intense battle is currently underway between the two candidates. The Electoral College votes in this state could be a determining factor in who will occupy the White House after the US presidential election. Therefore, the outcome of the debate here can become crucial.”
